New proposal (24.2.09):

As it was so far never possible, to absolve the whole programme, we want to discuss priorities with the course-visitors first. For writing and presentation we probably will organize a special course, with an extension into the handling of Adobe Indesign.

As the courses are ment for people that mostly don't own a computer themselves, the storage of the information has to be emphasized, means, the use of a personal usb-stick.

The course would be organized as follows:

  1. Basic Knowledge: Browser & Search + first elements of storage (+ interesting links as exercise).
  2. Storage on usb-stick: tree-structure of directories, copy, delete, move. Formats.
    USB-sticks (1GB) are sold at Mediamarkt for 19.80, Migros (Scan-Disk, 2 GB) 12.90, Steg (2 GB) 9.-
  3. Mail: write, send, reply, store
  4.   " Exercises, include pictures, tables, attachments - so the combination of browser, stick and mail.
  5. practical exercise:
Write, store, mail own text with collection of links, pictures and
    pdfs

For advanced group-members that get bored:

Exercise with public programmes.

  • try the public and free text processor ajax http://us.ajax13.com/en/ajaxwrite/ Only browser needed, no other installation. No registration needed, but may cause troubles.
  • more developped, but (free) registration needed: http://www.adobe.com/acom/buzzword/
  • do, free registration: Google e.g. offers the whole set of needed software for writing, spreadsheets etc. free. > use writely for texts

1.1 How do I use the browser?

view:

open a webpage:

For a start the most important is the central white window up, here with http://www.planet13.ch Here you enter an url, in case you know it. If it starts with www. there  is no need for http:// in front of it www.planet13.ch e.g). With a click on the green arrow on the right side, or enter, the page will open.

The green flash below <DATEI> serves to go back to the last page. The blue cercle-flash will load the page again, in case it did not load up completely, what happens rather often when the net is overloaded.

Quite helpful is Chronik/history, a list of  all websites you visited. It can be sorted after date of the visit, alphabet, number of visits or just in reverse order: last visit on top.

<Adresse öffnen> inside the <Datei>directory, opens files on your computer, a CD, disc, external drive or memory stick. . s. 2. graphik below

If the size of the text is too small for you to read, you may set it larger unter Ansicht > Schriftgrad > Vergrössern.

Here as well a helpful version of printing. On most computers (unluckily not at P13 ...) you may virtually print a document in Adobe pdf format, that means you change a screen appearence into a printable document that has moreover the advantage to be transportable between different computer systems (windows, mcintosh) and not dependend on programmes (windows word / open source). Important is for you to know, where to you saved it. So save it to a directory where later on you are most likely to look for it.

Downloads will normally be stored on the Desktop. But you are always able to choose an other place for the storage. On your own computer it is recommendable to create an own partition for the storage of data, because this partition will not be ruined if the programme (Windows 2000 rarely, Windows Millennium almost every week, Windows xp from time to time.  Microsoft Office Groove may e.g. develop activities under XP, even while you are not using the partition, that lead to an absolute and complete destruction of the system. Still: Aditional backups on CD, DVD or an external drive are really recommendable. USB-Sticks are less recommendable, as one takes the risk to forget it somewhere.

Do "waste" some time on the organisation of your data-storage, as such structures risk to stay for quite some time - and it is really helpful, if you know where to look for what. search under windows explorer helps, but is very slow with windows 2000 as well as XP. Visa's search is faster, as it is based on an index, but Vista is going to keep you busy with sufficient other problems.

Bookmarks are importent, if you want to go back to a website you remember, you found interesting. So do create a structure with folders and subfolders (if needed), for all fields important for you. :Best alphabetically:

Bookmarks that you need daily, or at least very often, should be placed in the Lesezeichen-Symbolleiste (here with Google AdSense, Postfinance etc.)

1.b The pdf-reader

If installed correctly, it will open inside the firefox-window.W

With the keys in the middle +- you may choose the size of the Text, so that it is comfortable for reading.

If you find that pdf interesting and you like to keep it, store it (speichern) on your computer (or at the Internet café on a memory stick)

You will need the selection of pictures or text in case you want to quote a pdf-text in a forum, an email, a chat or whatsoever (for publications do not forget to quote the source!)

On the left side you see here the bookmarks - of the opened pdf-document. You may click each chapter directly. If not for security reasons some things are blocked, you should be able as well to click the links inside the document.

Here you see on the left side the overview <pages>, that allows as well to open pages with a click.

Here on the right side the opened window for search, that allows you to search the opened pdf-document for keywords. Here you have a luck, as this has not been translated into german and is still in english ...

An other way of storing text in printable and transportable format is: xps, the Wwndows-wlternative to pdf

1.2 How do I find in the internet the things I'm looking for?

a) only who knows, what he is looking for, will be able to find. What concerns the where - google will help you.

b) GOOGLE & Co (Einstellungen, Suche, spezifisches zu google.ch, google.de, google.com google wissenschaft, bilder, s. http://www.google.com/support/

Important here is to choose the right search-empire: the web - pages in german - switzerland. As each country has its own google that arranges the findings after the countries preferences, you might need to choose an other google for the country of your interest:

If you don't get the expected result, or no result at all, check first if the name is probably misspelled - or if there is an other expression that is probably of more common use. check for synonyms: http://www.synonym.com/
